Estepona City Council is carrying out the ornamentation and beautification of the city’s public green spaces for the winter campaign, for which it is planting more than 250,000 specimens of colorful flowering plants and shrub species from the municipal nursery, as announced this Thursday by the Deputy Mayor for Services and External Control, Blas Ruzafa.
The municipal official stressed that this work is carried out throughout the year, because when this campaign – which will last until March – is over, spring-summer planting will begin.
The councillor explained that workers place an average of 50,000 plants a month, all from the municipal nursery, which, after several extensions, currently has a production capacity of over 500,000 plants a year, which, together with the existing multi-annual flower cycles, makes Estepona the city of a million flowers.
In this respect, he stressed that the fact that the plants come from the municipal nursery means a significant reduction in the costs involved in a beautification project of these features, a facility in which he pointed out that they work with new species that are tested in the municipal gardens to see which offer the best results in each area.
The councillor stressed that “the planting of flowering species has become one of the municipality’s trademarks and undoubtedly helps to consolidate the Estepona, Jardin de la Costa del Sol project”.
Blas Ruzafa added that the government team’s aim is for the city to have one of the “most important public gardens in Spain”, which is why plantings are carried out throughout the year, with flowers adapted to each season.
These plantings are carried out in the main avenues, on the seafront promenade, at the entrances to Estepona and in the town center squares, as well as in the suburbs.
In all, more than 400,000 square meters of green space are to be planted, with the new pedestrian section of Avenida de España and the recently redeveloped Plaza del Ajedrez to be added this year.
In terms of species, the deputy mayor pointed out that the main species planted were tajetes, lobelia, begonias, marigolds, geraniums and other shrubby species such as acalifers.
In addition, Ruzafa insisted that particular attention is paid to the design compositions that are created with these plants in order to achieve a greater visual attraction that captures the attention of citizens and visitors alike.
