Estepona Town Council is organizing the VIII Congress of Historical Heritage, to be held on June 15 and 16 at the Casa del Aljibe, and this year dedicated to the local archaeological heritage, as indicated on Tuesday by the councillor in charge of this sector, Daniel García.
The councillor said that the activities would take place at 7.30pm at the Casa del Aljibe, a building built over a cistern belonging to a tower from the Muslim era, located in Plaça Blas Infante, 1, which houses the Estepona Archaeological Museum.
The mayor explained that, in this edition, the conference will be dedicated to the local archaeological heritage and will include the presentation of a book and the opening of a temporary exhibition, admission to which will be free until it reaches full capacity. The conference opens on Thursday June 15 with the presentation of the book “El pecio del Guadiaro. Analyse typocronologique d’une cargaison de terra sigillata galicienne dans les environs d’Estepona (Málaga)”.
This is a detailed study of over two hundred ceramic vessels from the Roman period, produced in the south of France and dating from the end of the first century AD.
They come from the cargo of a Roman ship that sank some 1,900 years ago, and were recovered from the nets of several trawlers in the port of Estepona over the last few decades.
This is one of the most important collections of this type of Roman pottery in Spain, on display in one of the rooms of the Estepona Archaeological Museum.
The book will be presented by its authors, Macarena Bustamante Álvarez, professor of archaeology at the University of Granada, and Ildefonso Navarro Luengo, archaeologist at Estepona Town Hall.
On the second day of the conference, Friday June 16, a temporary exhibition will be inaugurated, showing the most outstanding materials that will be incorporated into the permanent exhibition of the Estepona Archaeological Museum in the near future.
The first items in this temporary exhibition date from the Lower and Middle Palaeolithic, up to 200,000 years ago.
From the Roman period, a child’s pendant and a large jar of Italian origin stand out.
The most important part of this museum extension corresponds to the Islamic period, and includes an interesting series of vessels, marble weights, pottery tools and a funerary stele.
