The mayor of Estepona, José María García Urbano, together with the architect and urban planner of Malaga, Salvador Moreno Peralta, today presided over the laying of the first stone of the project which will create a large public space in balcony on the Mediterranean and will include socio-cultural equipment, a commercial area and a restaurant, on Avenida de España, next to the lighthouse.
The councilor indicated that the future space will represent the most important urban transformation carried out in Estepona in recent years to bring the city closer to the sea, after the complete remodeling of the old town and the connection to the coast via the coastal path.
The councilor explained that the new socio-cultural complex will have several elements of interest such as a music conservatory, a first-rate exhibition space with large windows opening onto the sea and a unique vertical library, which will have a belvedere allowing visitors to enjoy a 360 degree panoramic view of the city.
Mr. García Urbano pointed out that the building will be completed with the regeneration of the Pedro Manrique promenade in the section adjacent to the marina and with a large public square at the level of the current road. For all these reasons, he stressed that “the essence of this new equipment is that it will be of a public and socio-cultural nature”. In addition, the facility will have a parking area and commercial premises.
The work for the execution of this project began at the end of last September. Following completion of clearing and preparation of the land below the causeway, work will focus over the next two months on the foundations of the structure to be built on the land.
