Estepona Town Hall will inaugurate “next week” the Mirador del Carmen social and cultural center, a facility that will open up the town to the sea and house an exhibition room featuring a selection of works from the Carmen Thyssen-Bornemiszam collection, with Malaga’s Carmen Thyssen Museum providing some of the pieces, according to the town hall. The project for the grand belvedere, designed by architect Salvador Moreno Peralta, began in September 2021 and the foundation stone was laid in December of the same year, until completion of the grand tower, which will be finished in March this year.
The City Council has earmarked an investment of more than “15 million euros” to erect the new building, he said.
Mirador del Carmen has a total of 15 floors, including an innovative vertical library with study areas, from which the Mediterranean Sea and the Strait of Gibraltar can be seen at all times like a great maritime balcony.
The facility also boasts a music conservatory, an auditorium for cultural events, retail and catering spaces, and a belvedere.
Another special feature of the tower is its cladding, which is wrapped in a transparent vinyl membrane that traps up to 80% of UVA rays from the outside, preventing overheating inside the building while allowing great transparency from the inside out.
The new building meets several objectives, including bringing culture closer to the local population, increasing the city’s tourism offering in this segment and integrating the area, where there were historically inequalities between the land where the new building is being constructed and neighboring areas, such as the marina or the fishermen’s district.
Covering an area of 15,000 square meters, the project was developed below the level of Avenida España, taking advantage of the great difference in level between the promenade and the beach, thus linking the city to the sea.
In addition, the building is complemented by a vast pedestrian zone with public squares and parks staggered between the avenue and the promenade, linking the port from La Rada beach and through the gardens of El Faro.
Exhibition room to be inaugurated on April 5: The exhibition room at the Socio-Cultural Center will have a unique premiere when it is inaugurated on April 5, with almost fifty works from the Carmen Thyssen-Bornemiszam collection. The Carmen Thyssen Museum in Malaga will provide some of the pieces, for which the Town Hall has signed a collaboration agreement with the art gallery to provide advice on the design of this type of cultural space.
The exhibition will begin with Romanticism and include “works belonging to post-impressionism, modernism and noucentisme, passing through the avant-garde and ending with pop art”, as explained in November by the artistic director of the Museo Carmen Thyssen Málaga, Lourdes Moreno.
One of the highlights of the exhibition will be the painting entitled “Estepona Beach with a View of the Rock of Gibraltar”, by artist Fritz Bamberger, dating from 1855. The Consistory will organize a series of open days so that the citizens of Estepona can enjoy the impressive views from the Mirador El Carmen tower, and will issue two annual invitations to registered residents of the city to visit the facility free of charge. The project completes the redevelopment of Avenida España: At the same time, Estepona City Council has completed the redevelopment and pedestrianization of Avenida España (formerly N-340), located in the center of the city, creating a large landscaped boulevard that integrates, over a kilometer in length, with the existing promenade.
This project is the culmination of the urban revitalization that Estepona has undergone over the past 12 years, placing the city at the forefront of those committed to quality of life, sustainability and the well-being of its citizens.
As such, this new area is a transitional point between the embellished city center, known as the “Garden of the Costa del Sol”, and the Mediterranean coast, with a new, revitalized space open to pedestrians.
