Estepona town council will be presenting its urban sustainability project at the International Tourism Fair (Fitur), which will open up the city to the sea, with the creation of a large pedestrian boulevard on Avenida España and the Mirador del Carmen socio-cultural center, which will open up the city to the sea, as announced on Monday by the mayor, José María García Urbano.
The councillor stressed that the project bears the stamp of Malaga architect and urban planner Salvador Moreno Peralta, winner of the National Urban Planning Award, who will accompany the mayor at the presentation.
This new tourist attraction is already underway with the remodeling and pedestrianization of the Avenida de España, which has created a large landscaped boulevard that integrates the existing promenade over a length of more than a kilometer, featuring a new public space with a shopping and leisure area, next to an emblematic building, the Mirador del Carmen, also for public use, which is located next to the Estepona lighthouse.
This facility will house a large library and study areas, a music conservatory, an auditorium for cultural events, a relevant exhibition hall that will open with pieces from the Carmen Thyssen collection and a belvedere that will become another important attraction for visitors, since it will be a vantage point from which to appreciate the marine essence of the city.
The mayor stressed that this initiative, which will be completed in the coming months, will be the culmination of Estepona’s urban and tourism revitalization, placing the city at the forefront of cities committed to quality of life, sustainability and the well-being of citizens.
“This new area has become a place of transition between the embellished city center, the “garden of the Costa del Sol”, and the Mediterranean coast, with a new revitalized space, more pleasant, open to pedestrians, full of nature and already one of the favorite places to stroll and enjoy the city”, he added.
In this way, Estepona City Council is completing the “Estepona, Garden of the Costa del Sol” project with a sustainable urban development initiative that will create a balcony overlooking the Mediterranean, generating another powerful tourist attraction and extending the appeal of the renovated city center to the city’s port area.
In this respect, the mayor pointed out that this year marks the 12th anniversary of the “Estepona, Garden of the Costa del Sol” project.
This initiative has had a valuable economic and social impact on the city, completely improving the city’s aesthetics, creating a sustainable city model and revitalizing the municipality’s economic and tourism activity.
“A real garden has been created over a vast urban area of more than 20 kilometers of streets, which has been complemented by other important initiatives such as the unique Botanique-Orchidarium park; an open-air museum with more than 60 works on building facades or the open-air library that was created thanks to the Poetry Route, which brings culture to the streets,” he added.
