Estepona town council has launched a call for tenders for the construction of a climbing wall to complement the sports facilities at the town’s permanent leisure park and fairground, a project with a basic budget of 1,264,682 euros, according to the mayor, José María García Urbano, who made the announcement on Wednesday.
The advisor stressed that the future facility, which will be the first of its kind in the region, will have the dimensions and features to host national and even international competitions, in addition to sporting events.
To encourage the development of the new facilities, construction will be carried out in compliance with regulatory standards that will enable amateurs and elite athletes alike to train or compete at all levels.
García Urbano explained that climbing has been part of the Olympic Games since Tokyo 2020, where the Spanish team achieved significant representation and success in terms of medal count.
“Interesting new horizons are therefore opening up for this discipline, while at the same time expanding Estepona’s sports offering with first-rate facilities,” said the councillor.
The basic budget for this facility is 1,264,682 euros (including VAT).
The creation of this climbing wall is financed by the recovery, transformation and resilience plan – funded by the European Union – Next Generation EU.
The action is included within the framework of the extraordinary program for the sustainability of tourism in destinations 2021-2023 in its axis 4 competitiveness of the Estepona Sustainable Tourism Strategic Plan 2022-2024.
Interested companies have until November 9 to submit their bids.
Once the work has been awarded, it will take a maximum of six months to complete.
The climbing wall planned by Estepona town council in the permanent leisure and exhibition park will have a structure with two elevations for sporting activities of different heights, with a total surface area of 662 square meters, divided into a 115-square-meter speed zone, a 363-square-meter difficulty zone and a 184-square-meter bouldering zone, according to the mayor, José María García Urbano.
The space, which will be open-air and have a roof, can also be used at night, as it will be equipped with a lighting system.
The councillor pointed out that over the last decade, Estepona has built sports facilities of great interest to the public, such as the permanent sports and leisure park, where many disciplines can be practiced free of charge all year round; the athletics stadium or the various tracks that have been created both in the city center neighborhoods and in the residential areas of the suburbs.
