Estepona will have the largest open-air climbing wall in Spain, with a steel structure weighing 130 tonnes and a surface area of 662 square metres, which will be dedicated exclusively to open-air climbing, without having to share the space with other sporting disciplines.
The municipality stresses that the infrastructure will be a national benchmark, both in terms of its characteristics and its dimensions.
The structure will be located in the Parque Ferial y Deportivo de Estepona and will enable, in addition to the practice of amateur sport, the hosting of national and international competitions in this sport, which has been Olympic since Tokyo 2020.
The facility, which is in the final stages of construction, will have a covered area and can also be used at night, as it will be equipped with a lighting system.
Climbing is a fast-growing sport, and this climbing wall aims to attract amateurs and elite athletes to take up the sport in schools and clubs, as well as to train and compete at all levels.
This construction represents an investment of 1.68 million euros and is financed by the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan funded by the European Union-EU Next Generation.
The project is included in the extraordinary Destination Tourism Sustainability Program 2021-2023 in its Competitiveness Axis 4 of the Estepona Sustainable Tourism Strategic Plan 2022-2024.
Details of the Estepona climbing wall Construction has been carried out in compliance with the regulatory standards that make this compatibility of uses possible.
More specifically, the Estepona climbing wall has been designed for the following types of climbing: difficulty, speed and bouldering.
It will have a total surface area of 662 square metres, which will be divided for the different categories of this discipline: a speed zone (115 square metres), a difficulty zone (363 square metres) and a bouldering zone (184 square metres).
The structure has two elevations of varying heights for the development of sporting activities, on which the loads defined by specialists in the field have been provided for, in compliance with the applicable regulations specific to this sporting activity.
For the climbing wall, high-precision 3D modeling and a 130-ton self-supporting steel structure with a luminous coating were used.
The space will be covered and can also be used at night, as it will be equipped with a lighting system.
The Andalusian company Sepisur XXI S.L. was entrusted with the execution of the works, which are at an advanced stage of completion.
For the sports equipment, the construction company chose the services of the multinational EP Climbing, a Spanish manufacturer experienced in building climbing walls for the Olympic Games.
The climbing wall model, similar to the one built by this company for the 2023 Pan-American Games in Santiago de Chile and other events in Asia, stands out for its uniqueness and versatility, as it features a large fixed outdoor structure.
For all these reasons, they emphasize that this is a unique facility at national level.
