The Estepona town council will authorize the filling of swimming pools and guarantee supplies when the desalination plant comes on stream in May.
The Consistory has just commissioned two brackish water wells in the Padrón area, generating 2,000 cubic meters per day, and is working on the construction of other wells to add a further 3,400 cubic meters per day.
The mayor of Estepona, José María García Urbano, has announced that work to install the containerized desalination plant in the Castor River area, which will be able to generate 8,000 cubic meters of fresh water per day in the first phase, will begin in June.
The mayor of Estepona, José María García Urbano, announced today that the town council will authorize the filling of communal and private swimming pools this summer, after confirming that the water supply is guaranteed in the municipality this summer and after the Junta de Andalucía left this decision in the hands of local administrations.
Following the latest rains, which have placed the region’s water capacity at levels similar to those recorded last year, and the new municipal infrastructure works being promoted to incorporate up to 16,300 cubic meters per day into the network, the Consistory considers that the use of urban and private swimming pools can be authorized during the summer season.
The councillor explained that Estepona City Council has been working since last year to set up new water infrastructures in response to the drought situation.
Among the first measures is the installation of a desalination plant in the Padrón river area, which will start operating in May and produce 2,900 cubic meters of fresh water per day.
It joins the containerized desalination plant in the Castor River area, which has been in the manufacturing process since December, with installation scheduled to begin in June.
In its first phase, this project will produce 8,000 cubic meters per day.
The municipal council is also in the process of adapting the 53,000 square metre plot of land on which this municipal infrastructure will be located.
In addition, two wells in the Padrón area, which had been unused since the 1990s, have been adapted and put into service, which will add 2,000 cubic meters per day to the supply network.
In addition, the Consistory has obtained authorization from the Junta de Andalucía to drill new boreholes to enable the construction of new brackish wells, which would supply up to 3,400 cubic meters of water per day.
The mayor also announced that Estepona City Council was working on the creation of a certification system for swimming pools that, due to their sustainable characteristics, use water responsibly.
Aspects such as the presence of protective canopies to prevent water evaporation or water purification plants with water recovery, among others, will be evaluated.
Those who obtain the certificate will be guaranteed the use of water in times of drought.
The councillor also pointed out that, although water resources are assured for this summer, it’s important that we all use water responsibly and that the various public administrations work to set up infrastructures that guarantee supplies in areas where the tourist sector has a significant economic weight.
The mayor explained that all the measures taken by Estepona City Council will also have a positive impact on the other municipalities in the region, as the water produced in the city will avoid the use of shared resources that existed until now.
In addition, the Consistory has indicated that it will use the water produced by the new infrastructures in a spirit of solidarity, and has expressed its willingness to collaborate with the other municipalities with which it shares the upstream supply network.
Mr. García Urbano pointed out that Estepona City Council has carried out a great deal of work in recent years to ensure that the technical efficiency of the water supply network exceeds 85%, almost 10 percentage points higher than the annual average for Spanish cities.
In this way, water losses and leaks are avoided, and this resource is put to better use.
