This opening on Avenida Puerta del Mar means the closure of the Juan Carlos I store. This Monday, Mercadona opens a new efficient supermarket in Estepona, more precisely on Avenida Puerta del Mar.
The opening means the closure of the company’s conventional store on Avenida Juan Carlos I. According to a company press release, the new supermarket “enhances service excellence and optimizes the shopping experience” for customers.
In addition, the establishment features improvements that “benefit” customers, workers, suppliers and society.
Fifteen suppliers participated in the construction of this efficient new Mercadona supermarket, employing 90 people during the building phase.
Among the store’s new features is the “Ready to Eat” section, which offers ready-to-eat dishes.
The various options are served in packaging made from natural materials, such as sugar cane (a compostable material), cardboard or paper.
In addition, the new supermarket features, among other improvements, a new entrance with double-glazing to avoid draughts, wider aisles, a rest area in the same store with chairs and tables where customers can eat their freshly prepared dishes and accompany them with cold drinks, as well as a new model of supermarket cart and a new model of basket cart that is much more ergonomic and lighter.
The Avenida Puerta del Mar location boasts a sales area of over 1,900 square metres and 190 parking spaces.
It also features a completely renewed design compared to the previous store model, with new colors and materials, although the facade of this new center features a glass curtain wall as an architectural contribution to the area, as well as parking canopies with a special treatment for their integration into the landscape.
Technology and ergonomics for Mercadona workers With the aim of facilitating workers’ daily tasks, this new supermarket includes multiple measures to improve ergonomics and eliminate overwork, according to the company.
For example, Mercadona’s new checkout was developed in collaboration with the Valencia Institute of Biomechanics.
The store also boasts common areas for employees to enjoy greater comfort when resting, as well as a better-equipped canteen and larger, more comfortable personal lockers.
In addition, this efficient new Mercadona store in Estepona is fully technologically connected, thanks to the integration of a series of electronic devices and collaboration tools for workers, with which they can share information from any section of the store, facilitating the self-management of each supermarket and streamlining processes throughout the chain.
New features include checkout lines, scales and the use of electronic tablets to replace paper for administrative tasks.
All this helps to optimize processes and provide real-time insight into store management, facilitating decision-making and contributing to greater agility, particularly in the management of fresh produce. Energy savings: eco-efficient store To promote respect for the environment, measures have been taken to reduce energy consumption by up to 40% compared with the conventional store model, thanks to improved thermal and acoustic insulation, optimized materials and thickness of walls and ceilings, and new, more energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly freezers.
It also features an automated LED lighting system, regulated according to zone and time of day, for much more efficient energy management.
In this respect, 200 kWh of solar panels have been installed on the roof of the new Estepona supermarket, covering around 20% of the energy consumed by the store.
