In this new edition, Antonia Guerrero Díaz was awarded posthumously and, to mark the designation of 2023 as the Year of the Bicycle in Estepona, prizes were awarded to cyclists Natalia Fischer, Sara Ponte Salas and Carmen Martín Jiménez.
Mayor José María García Urbano presided over the institutional ceremony for International Women’s Day, during which the “March 8 Awards” were posthumously presented to Antonia Guerrero Díaz and cyclists Natalia Fisher Egusquiza, Carmen Martín Jiménez and Sara Ponte Salas, four women who exemplify the struggle for women’s equality in different fields.
The mayor declared that today “is a day to give visibility and importance to women, to recognize the work of individuals, groups and institutions that stand out for their work in favor of women, and to strengthen our commitment to continue working for equality, with the aim of contributing to a society that is fairer, more responsible, more humane and with a better quality of life”.
Antonia Guerrero Díaz was honoured posthumously, on the 175th anniversary of her birth, for her legacy of defending women in Estepona.
Not only in the field of education, given the difficulties of access to education suffered by women at the time, but also in terms of social justice, by wanting to favor the most disadvantaged.
Similarly, and in view of the fact that the Corporation’s plenary assembly approved the declaration of 2023 as the “Year of the Bicycle” in Estepona, prizes were also awarded to the outstanding and renowned cyclists Natalia Fischer Egusquiza, Carmen Martín Jiménez and Sara Ponte Salas.
In this way, the Consistory wishes to give visibility to the effort, discipline and excellent work these women do to promote women’s cycling.
Ms García Urbano also highlighted the work carried out by the Estepona Municipal Women’s Information Centre in providing assistance, information and support to women, and in raising awareness of the importance of equality education.
