Work on the public park in the Las Mesas area of Estepona is 50% complete, a project with a budget of 790,000 euros that will provide the municipality with a new green lung and open-air recreational area, according to the mayor, José María García Urbano, who made the announcement this Friday.
This was emphasized by the councillor during a tour of the works, where he was accompanied by the deputy mayor in charge of services and external control, Blas Ruzafa, pointing out that Las Mesas is one of the fastest-growing areas in the city, located to the north between Calle Letonia and Calle Tres Banderas.
The mayor emphasized the importance that this facility will have for the city, explaining that “the commitment that the City Council makes to quality of life goes hand in hand, without a doubt, with the creation of green and recreational spaces and quality public spaces for citizens”.
In this case, the city council gave value to a disused plot of land that was home to a former water storage reservoir.
To this end, the first phase of work involved filling and refurbishing the old reservoir using soil from the excavation of the new Las Mesas reservoir, which Hidralia is currently building.
So, instead of transferring this soil to landfill, it is being reused to fill the old reservoir and prepare the area for the second phase of the park’s construction, which began last September.
This new “green lung” has a surface area of 16,500 square metres, most of which will be green and landscaped spaces, reinforcing the “Estepona, Garden of the Costa del Sol” project.
It will also feature squares, grandstands, children’s play areas, outdoor sports areas and an artificial lake.
Work is scheduled for completion by the end of March.
It also includes the planting of native species, shrubs, perennials, ground cover and climbers over an approximate area of 3,700 square metres, representing 32% of the soft landscaping surface.
Their distribution was made taking into account the existing open spaces in each area of land earmarked for specific planting, between the lakes and slopes and the rest of the naturalized area.
The planting of shrubs and other species is intended to bring naturalness, color and greater coverage to the natural terrain.
Forest areas have also been designed on the steep east- and southeast-facing slopes, with a composition of Mediterranean tree plantations to provide greater ground cover and prevent surface erosion.
Other species will also be planted, such as palms and similar species, which will be used mainly in wetter areas.
An artificial lake has been planned, to be located to the south of the civic square, and configured on four levels.
These levels are linked by three waterfalls in the form of a one-metre cascade to bridge the approximate height difference (from start to finish) of 4 metres.
The lake will also feature two water features and a water supply in the upper sections to induce a laminar cascade in the various waterfalls.
