Casares is one of the most beautiful villages in the province of Málaga, and is perched on a hill between the mountainous region of Ronda, the Costa del Sol and the Camp de Gibraltar. It was declared a historical site in 1978.
The origins of Casaresdate back to Roman times, when Julius Caesar ordered its construction out of gratitude: he had cured himself by immersing himself in the Hedionda Baths. Among its monuments and sites are the ruins of an Arab castle, the 17th-century Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación church, the 16th-century Santa Catalina convent, the Ballesteros, La Hedionda and Sima de los Huesos caves.
